Topic: Isaiah: Speaking Truth to Power with Dr. Susanna Garfein
The Book of Isaiah is one of the longest and most complex prophetic works in the Hebrew Bible/TaNaKh. Isaiah of Jerusalem lived in the late eighth and early seventh centuries BCE and was a powerful advocate for social justice. As an advisor to kings, he embodied the notion of “speaking truth to power.” Isaiah’s words are timeless but were spoken in a particular time and place for the purpose of bringing about change in the world he saw around him, a world teetering on the edge of disaster, both moral and political. Through a close reading of the Book of Isaiah—especially chapters 1-39—we will connect with the literary artistry of the book in its historical context and reflect upon its meaning for our time.
