Learning is for grownups!

For lifelong, adult learners, we offer several ongoing opportunities from our clergy and guest instructors, as well as annual programs and one-off opportunities.

Ongoing Opportunities

Torah Talk (Shabbat/Saturday mornings, year round)

Every week, you can join a member of our clergy and other learners for Torah Talk–a deep dive into the Torah portion of the week and related sources from the Tanakh (Hebrew Scriptures). The only prerequisite is a willingness to wrestle with ideas and words. In person and on Zoom, Saturdays from 9 - 10 am.

PEP (Pursuing Educational Possibilities) (Sunday mornings during the school year)

PEP classes provide community and content to sharpen your wits and deepen your understanding. Give yourself the gift of both presence and depth with these substantive conversations about Jewish texts and concepts that matter.

All PEP classes are in person on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:30 am with snacks and coffee.

Adult Hebrew Study

If you’re looking to launch or improve your Hebrew knowledge, we can help.

Adult Beginner Hebrew:
For absolute beginners
Sunday Mornings, 9:15 to 10:30 am (in person & online)

Understanding Prayerbook Hebrew:
For those who can sound out the alphabet and want to move to the next level.
Sunday Mornings, 10:45-11:45  am (in person & online)

Adult B'Mitzvah

For adults who would like to chant from the Torah for the first time, BHC’s Adult B’Mitzvah is offered on a two-year cycle. The process invites the adult learner to get more proficient in Hebrew, delve deep into a single parsha (portion) and connect more deeply with the shabbat liturgy. Membership at BHC is required.

Annual offerings:

Summer and Winter Nights on Park Heights

Meet us in BHC’s Bernstein Garden in the summer or grab your favorite blanket and a warm drink before finding us on Zoom in the winter. These fun evenings of current-event discussions are led by BHC’s clergy and educators, with congregant guest teachers. Deepen connections with fellow learners through conversation and questions about current events–with a Jewish twist. You’ll learn about the world, yourself, and the other participants. You may enter the room with strangers, but you’ll walk out with friends!
